Air & Fuel Ratio Sensor (Upstream)

This engine sensor is installed in the exhaust stream before the catalytic converter. It’s needed to help the ECU fine-tune the air-to-fuel mix so your Mazda runs clean, smooth, and fuel-efficient βœ….

How It Works

The sensing tip measures oxygen content in the hot exhaust gases and sends a fast feedback signal to the ECU. The ECU then adjusts injector pulse and fuel trim in real time. When the mixture is correct, combustion stays stable, emissions drop, and throttle response feels crisp βš™οΈ.

If the Sensor Fails

A weak or contaminated sensor can misread the mixture. The ECU may overfuel or run lean, causing rough idle, hesitation, higher fuel consumption, and a glowing check engine light ?. Long driving with wrong readings can overheat or damage the catalytic converter, increase carbon buildup, and fail emissions testing.

Why Replace It

Replacing a tired air-fuel feedback sensor restores accurate fueling control, protects the catalyst, and brings back proper MPG and drivability. Ideal when you have mixture-related fault codes, sluggish acceleration, or unstable fuel trims.
