Why this part is needed

This upstream AFR (oxygen) sensor tells the ECU how rich or lean the exhaust is so it can keep the mix near 14.7:1. How it works

Inside is a heated zirconia wideband cell. It compares oxygen in exhaust to a reference and generates a precise current.
