Air & Fuel Ratio Sensor (Upstream Mixture Sensor) for Mazda
This engine sensor is needed to keep the fuel mixture close to perfect during idle, cruising, and acceleration. It sits in the exhaust stream before the catalyst and βsniffsβ oxygen content to help the ECU correct fueling fast. When the mixture is right, you get smooth power, better fuel economy, and lower emissions β
How It Works
Inside the sensor is a ceramic sensing element and a built-in heater. The heater warms it quickly after cold start ? so readings become accurate within seconds. The ECU uses this signal to adjust injector pulse width, keeping the air-to-fuel balance stable even when load, temperature, or altitude changes.
What Happens If It Fails
A weak or dead sensor can cause rough idle, hesitation, higher fuel use, fuel smell, and failed emissions test. The check engine light may come on, and long-term rich running can damage the catalytic converter ?. Replacing a faulty upstream mixture sensor restores proper closed-loop control and protects the exhaust system.
