Engine Crankshaft Main Bearing οΈ
This precision engine bearing supports the crankshaft inside the block and keeps it perfectly aligned while the engine spins at high RPM. It is needed to create a smooth, low-friction surface so oil can form a thin βhydrodynamicβ film between metal parts. That oil film is what prevents scoring, heat buildup, and power loss.
How It Works
The bearing sits in the main journal saddles and wraps around the crankshaft journal. As the crank rotates, pressurized oil fills the bearing clearance, carrying load and reducing contact. Correct clearance helps oil pressure stay stable and keeps the crank running true, which protects connecting rods, pistons, and the timing system.
If the Bearing Is Worn or Damaged
A failing bearing can cause low oil pressure, knocking/rumbling under load, metal flakes in oil, and overheating of the journal. If ignored, the crank can seize or spin the bearing shell, damaging the block and crankshaft beyond repair.
