Engine Oil Pickup Strainer for Mazda Engines οΈ
This is the sump-mounted oil pickup strainer that protects your Mazdaβs lubrication system. Itβs needed to stop metal shavings, sealant crumbs, and sludge from entering the oil pump and bearings. Clean oil means stable pressure, quiet valve train, cooler pistons, and long engine life.
How it works
A rigid pickup tube feeds the pump through a domed, fine stainless mesh. The screen traps debris while flowing enough oil for hot idle and high RPM. Its anti-drain design helps keep the pickup primed after shutdown, so pressure rises fast at start. The set clearance above the pan floor prevents starvation during hard braking, cornering, or steep climbs.
What happens if itβs bad β οΈ
Clogged mesh, cracked tube, or a flattened O-ring causes cavitation and low pressure. Symptoms include lifter tick, timing chain rattle, flickering oil light at idle, dull knocking on throttle, and bearing wear. Ignore it, and you risk spun bearings or a seized engine. If the pan has sludge or silicone strings, replace the pickup, renew the seal, and change oil and filter.
Tech tips
Clean the sump, verify pump condition, torque fasteners to spec, and confirm pickup-to-pan clearance. Use correct viscosity oil after repair.
