Automatic Gear Inhibitor Switch (Transmission Range Sensor) ⚙️
This electrical switch is a key safety and drive-control part in many Mazda/Ford-based automatic transmissions. It tells the car which selector position you chose (P, R, N, D, etc.), so the starter, reverse lights, and shift logic work correctly. Without a healthy sensor, the vehicle may not know what gear it’s in.
Why this part is needed ✅
It prevents unsafe starting and supports clean gear selection. The system allows engine cranking only in Park or Neutral, and it confirms Reverse to activate the rear lamps and related functions.
How it works ?
Inside the housing, sliding contacts align with the shift shaft position. The switch sends specific signals to the ECU/TCU and body circuits. When adjusted correctly, it matches the shifter detents so the car starts and shifts as designed.
What happens if it’s broken ❌
Common symptoms include no-crank in Park, starting only in Neutral, wrong gear indicator, reverse lights not working, harsh/late shifting, or the transmission going into limp mode. In bad cases, the car may start in an unsafe range—do not ignore it.
