Automatic Transmission Range Sensor for Mazda βš™οΈ

This gear position sensor, also called a neutral safety switch, tells the ECU and starter which shift lever position you selected (P, R, N, D). It allows the engine to crank only in Park/Neutral and aligns transmission logic for clean, predictable shifts and correct reverse lights.

Why you need it

A good sensor protects the starter, prevents unexpected vehicle movement, enables safe backing with proper lamps, and keeps shift timing and line pressure correct. It’s a small part with big impact on safety and drivability.

How it works

Inside is a rotary contact pack linked to the selector shaft. Moving the lever changes dedicated circuits. The ECU reads these circuits to authorize starting, choose shift maps, and switch the backup lamps.

What happens if it fails ❗

Hard/no start unless shifter is jiggled, incorrect or dead reverse lights, harsh or delayed shifts, limp-home mode, gear indicator mismatch, and a check-engine light. Causes include worn tracks, moisture ingress, bent linkage, or misalignment.

Tech tips

Before replacement, inspect bushings and cable play. Set the sensor on its alignment marks with the lever in Neutral, then snug bolts. Clean the connector, confirm power/ground, and verify the engine starts only in P/N after installation.
