Engine Valve Rocker Arm
This rocker arm is a key valvetrain piece that transfers camshaft motion to the engine valves. It’s needed to keep valve timing accurate so the engine can breathe correctly, run smooth, and deliver proper power and fuel economy ⚙️.
How It Works
The camshaft pushes on the rocker, and the rocker pivots to press the valve open against spring pressure. When the cam lobe moves away, the spring closes the valve again. A good rocker keeps the contact surfaces aligned, reduces friction, and maintains correct valve lift for clean combustion.
Why You Should Replace It
If the rocker arm is worn, bent, or cracked, valve lift becomes uneven. That can cause tapping noise, misfire, loss of power, rough idle, and higher fuel use. In severe cases it may drop a valve action, damage the cam lobe, pushrod/lifter area (if equipped), or lead to costly top-end repairs 🚗.
Symptoms of a Bad Rocker Arm
- Ticking/knocking from the valve cover
- Engine hesitation and weak acceleration
- Misfire, poor idle, increased emissions
- Metal flakes in oil after wear
