Steering Pinion Dust Boot for Precise Control
This rubber gaiter shields the steering pinion area from road grit, water, and salt. It locks in grease around the input shaft and bearings, helping the steering rack turn smoothly and last longer. A healthy boot keeps the inner seal clean, reduces wear, and protects the assist system on power steering units.
Why you need it
Without this boot, dirt works into the pinion and upper rack section. Grease becomes abrasive, bearings score, and the pinion seal ages fast. Keeping this cover intact saves the steering rack from early failure and noisy operation.
How it works οΈ
The molded elastomer bellows clamps to the pinion housing and forms a flexible barrier. It moves with steering input, maintaining a tight seal while the column rotates and the rack operates.
If the boot is damaged β οΈ
Expect heavier steering, notchiness, squeaks, fluid mist (on PAS), play at center, and corrosion. A split gaiter can lead to MOT/inspection failure and an expensive rack rebuild.
Fitting tips
Clean grooves, lightly grease sealing lips, align without twist, and use new clamps at OE tension. Do not overtighten or pinch the bellows.
