Why it’s needed ❄️
Engines are designed to run near a set temperature. Below it, fuel doesn’t burn efficiently; above it, oil thins and parts overheat. A quality thermostat locks in the right balance, protecting gaskets, sensors, and the radiator.
How it works ⚙️
Inside is a wax pellet that expands around 88°C. When cold, the valve stays shut, keeping coolant in the block for a quick warm-up. As temperature rises, the valve opens progressively, directing flow through the radiator to remove heat. It continuously modulates to hold the target temp.
If it fails
Stuck open: slow warm-up, weak heater, rich running, higher fuel use, soot. Stuck closed: rapid overheating, boiling coolant, warning light, risk of warped head or head-gasket damage. Leaking or weak valve: temperature swings, fan cycling, and reduced performance.
