Engine/Transmission Thrust Washer – Precision Endplay Control

This thrust washer is a small but critical spacer used inside the rotating assembly (commonly crankshaft thrust area or certain gearbox shafts). Its job is to control axial movement (endplay) so the shaft cannot “walk” forward and backward when you press the clutch, change load, or accelerate. Without correct endplay control, even a healthy engine can wear fast.

During operation, oil film and thrust faces carry side-loads created by clutch pressure, torque converter force, and gear thrust. This washer provides a smooth bearing surface that keeps alignment true, protects the block/case, and maintains stable oil clearance.

How it works ⚙️

The washer sits against the thrust face and rides on a thin layer of engine/gear oil. It acts like a controlled slip surface: strong enough to take load, smooth enough to reduce friction, and precisely sized to hold endplay within spec.

If it’s worn or broken

Excess endplay can cause knocking, clutch drag, hard shifting, oil pressure issues, crank/shaft misalignment, and rapid bearing wear. In severe cases it can damage the crankshaft thrust surface or transmission case, turning a simple service part into a major rebuild.
