Drum brakes depend on precise geometry. The strut supports the shoes, sets their working distance, stabilizes them under load, and transfers handbrake motion. It prevents chatter, binding, and uneven contact inside the drum.

How it works ⚙️

Press the pedal: the wheel cylinder spreads the shoes while the strut keeps alignment and shares load. Pull the handbrake: the lever pushes through the strut to expand the opposite shoe, locking the drum. It uses hardened pads to bear on the shoes and clips/springs to stay seated.

What happens if it’s damaged ⚠️

Signs include weak parking brake, pulling to one side, squeal, hot drum, and uneven shoe wear. A bent or seized strut can drag the brake, overheat bearings, or cause long stops. If clips are missing, you may hear rattles and the handbrake may not hold on hills.
