This component keeps the serpentine belt tight so the alternator, water pump, A/C compressor, and power steering run efficiently. How it works ⚙️

A preloaded spring presses a pivoting arm that carries a low-friction bearing and crowned pulley. As belt length changes with load and temperature, the arm moves to keep constant tension and straight tracking. The internal damper controls arm oscillation, preventing belt flutter at idle and high RPM.

What happens if it fails

• Cold-start squeal, chirp, or rattling
• Belt glazing, fraying, or cracks
• Pulley wobble or rough bearing noise
• Dim lights, overheating, weak steering assist

If the bearing seizes or the spring weakens, the belt can jump or snap—causing sudden loss of charging and cooling. Continued driving risks engine damage.

Service tips

Replace the belt with the pulley as a set. Check alignment and pulley offset; misalignment destroys belts fast. Spin the old bearing—any grit or play means failure. Tighten fasteners to factory torque and follow the belt routing diagram.
