Why this part is needed

The ring and pinion gears must meet at an exact contact pattern. The spacer controls the “crush” or spacing that keeps bearings tight enough to prevent wobble, but not so tight that they overheat. Without the correct spacer thickness, even a good bearing and seal can’t hold the pinion stable.
