Why you need it ✅

Frequent shifting, towing, and heat wear the hub teeth and matching sleeve. Once edges round off, the sleeve cannot lock 5th gear cleanly. Replacing the hub returns correct tooth profile and alignment, saving the synchro rings and the 5th gear set.

How it works

When you select 5th, the shift sleeve slides over the hub splines. The blocker ring slows the gear to match shaft speed, then the sleeve’s dog teeth engage. The hub centers the sleeve, carries torque, and keeps everything concentric so engagement is fast and silent.

If it’s worn or broken ⚠️

Expect grinding into 5th, refusal to engage, or pop-out under load. You may feel vibration at cruise and avoid using 5th, hurting fuel economy. Continued use can strip dogs, chip the slider, and damage the 5th gear cone and bearings.

Tech tips

Install with a new slider and synchro ring as a set, inspect the shift fork, and torque the mainshaft nut to spec. Use quality GL-4 75W-90 and verify endplay after assembly.
