Engine Crankshaft Pulley (Harmonic Damper)

Why you need it

This pulley drives the serpentine belt that powers the alternator, water pump, power steering, and A/C. It also works as a harmonic balancer, absorbing torsional vibrations from the crank. Without a healthy pulley, accessories underperform and the engine endures extra stress, shortening bearing and seal life.

How it works ⚙️

Mounted on the crank nose, the hub locks to the crankshaft while a rubber isolator bonds the outer inertia ring. As the engine spins, the ring’s mass smooths vibration and the belt grooves transfer clean drive to accessories. Correct offset and groove profile keep belt tracking stable and quiet.

If it’s worn or broken ❗

Expect belt squeal, wobble, charging issues, overheating, heavy steering, vibration at idle, or a “misfire” feel. A delaminated rubber layer can let the ring walk off, shred the belt, damage the front seal, and leave you stranded. Driving with a cracked or rusty pulley risks sudden failure.

Tech tips

Check runout and rubber condition, replace bolt if torque-to-yield, clean mating surfaces, and keep oil off the damper rubber. Always verify belt alignment after fitment.
