Crank-to-Cam Timing Sprocket Gear βοΈ
This precision-machined timing gear is a key link between the crankshaft and camshaft. It is needed to keep valve timing accurate, so the engine can breathe correctly, build power, and run smoothly in all RPM ranges.
How It Works
The gear sits on the crank/cam drive path and guides the timing belt/chain alignment by providing exact tooth engagement. As the crank rotates, the sprocket transfers motion with fixed timing marks, helping the camshaft open and close valves at the right moment. Correct tooth profile prevents belt/chain wandering, noise, and premature wear.
When This Part Fails
A worn, chipped, or warped gear can cause timing to drift, leading to hard starting, rough idle, loss of power, misfires, and ticking/whining noises. If teeth damage gets worse, the belt/chain may jump timing; on many engines this can bend valves and trigger severe internal damage. Replace at the first sign of abnormal wear or during major timing service.
