Manual Gearbox Reverse Light Switch ?

This small electrical switch is installed on the manual transmission and is needed to turn on the reverse (back-up) lights when you select R. It also helps other systems β€œknow” the car is in reverse, improving safety during parking and tight maneuvers.

How it works βš™οΈ

Inside the switch is a spring-loaded plunger. When the gear selector moves into reverse, the shift mechanism presses the plunger and the contacts close. This sends power to the rear back-up lamps, lighting the area behind the vehicle and warning others that you are backing up.

What happens if it fails ?

If the switch is broken, worn, or the contacts are burned, the reverse lights may not come on, may flicker, or may stay on all the time. That can lead to failed inspection, higher risk of backing accidents, and confusion for drivers behind you. In some cases, oil contamination or corrosion can also cause intermittent operation.
