Why you need it
This thin, hardened plate controls crankshaft endplay (axial movement). It keeps the crank centered so gears, timing, and clutch/torque converter loads stay aligned. With correct thrust, you get smooth shifting, quiet idle, steady oil pressure, and longer bearing life. Itβs a small part that protects your block and crank from costly wear. βοΈ
How it works
The plate sits at a main bearing journal and rides on an oil film. Both faces act like a thrust bearing, absorbing forward and rearward push from the clutch or the transmission. Proper thickness sets precise endplay and prevents the crank from walking in the block.
If worn or broken
Expect metallic scrape, endplay knock when pressing the clutch, harsh shifts, stalling with clutch in, crank pulley moving in/out, and rear/main seal leaks. Severe wear can damage the block saddle and trigger crank sensor issues. Ignoring it risks total engine failure. β οΈ
