Why you need it οΈ
This sealing ring sits between the oil cooler housing and the engine block/filter base. Its job is simple: keep pressurized oil inside the cooler circuit and stop any oil/coolant crossβleak. A fresh seal maintains stable oil pressure, clean lubrication, and safe engine temperature.
How it works
Made from heatβresistant elastomer (Viton/FKM grade in OE spec), the ring compresses in a machined groove. Under torque, it fills microβgaps, locking in oil even during cold starts, high RPM, and hot soak. It resists fuel mist, coolant vapor, and constant thermal cycling.
If the seal fails β οΈ
Expect wet oil around the cooler base, drips on the undertray, burning oil smell, and falling oil level. In worse cases, oil and coolant can mix (milky fluids), oil pressure can drop, bearings/turbo may wear fast, and overheating or a red oil lamp can follow. Prolonged leaks risk costly engine damage.
Tech notes
Always clean mating faces, inspect the cooler spigot, lightly oil the new ring, and torque to spec in a crissβcross pattern. Replace the seal anytime the cooler is removed. Pair with a fresh filter and check for residual leaks after warmβup.
