This center main bearing supports the crankshaft at its middle journal, where load is highest. It is needed to keep the crank perfectly aligned while the engine runs, so oil clearance stays correct and friction stays low. Without a healthy bearing, even a strong engine will start to lose smoothness and oil control.

The bearing shell sits in the engine block and forms a smooth surface for the crankshaft to rotate on. A pressurized oil film separates metal-to-metal contact, carrying heat away and preventing scoring. The center position helps stabilize crank flex under acceleration, towing, and high RPM.
