Transmission Drive Shaft Oil Seal
This oil seal sits where the transmission/transfer drive shaft passes through the case. Its main job is simple: keep gear oil/ATF inside while the shaft spins at high speed β . A healthy seal protects the gearbox, bearings, and CV joints from running dry and keeps the underside of the car clean.
Why this seal is needed
The drive shaft constantly rotates and moves slightly with suspension travel. The sealβs flexible lip hugs the shaft surface and forms a tight barrier. A small spring inside helps maintain even pressure, even when temperatures change ?οΈ.
How it works
- Sealing lip rides on the shaft to stop fluid escape
- Metal/rubber outer ring locks into the transmission housing
- Fluid film lubrication reduces friction and heat
If itβs worn or broken
You may notice oil spots, a burning smell on hot exhaust parts, or low transmission fluid. If ignored, the gearbox can run low, causing noisy bearings, harsh shifting, overheating, and expensive internal damage β οΈ. Replacing the seal early is a small repair that prevents big failures.
