Engine Oxygen Feedback Sensor (Upstream) ?

This sensor is needed to help the ECU β€œsee” how much oxygen is left in the exhaust after combustion. With that data, the engine computer fine-tunes fuel injection to keep the air/fuel mix close to ideal. The result is smoother power, better fuel economy, and lower emissions.

How it works βš™οΈ

Installed in the exhaust stream, the sensing element generates a signal that changes with oxygen content. The ECU reads this signal and constantly corrects injector pulse to prevent running too rich or too lean. Many units use an internal heater so it reaches operating temperature fast, improving cold-start control.

Signs of failure & what happens if it’s broken ❌

When the sensor gets slow, contaminated, or the heater circuit fails, the ECU may switch to open-loop or use default values. Expect higher fuel consumption, rough idle, hesitation, black smoke, fuel smell, catalytic converter stress, and a check engine light. Long-term driving can overheat the catalyst and damage plugs due to an overly rich mixture.
