Exhaust Valve Basics

The exhaust valve is crucial for the proper operation of an engine. It opens at the right moment to allow exhaust gases to exit the combustion chamber following ignition. This process is integral for engine performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions control.

How It Works

Controlled by the engine's camshaft, the exhaust valve opens in synchrony with the piston's movement. After the air-fuel mixture ignites and the piston pushes downwards, the valve opens to release the burnt gases into the exhaust manifold, and subsequently out of the tailpipe.

Consequences of a Broken Valve

If an exhaust valve is broken or fails to seal properly, it can cause engine misfires, reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and increased emissions. In severe cases, it may lead to complete engine failure.
