Timing Belt Tensioner Arm β Stable Engine Timing for Mitsubishi βοΈ
Why itβs needed
This lever keeps the timing belt at the correct tension, locking camshaft and crankshaft in perfect sync. Without steady belt control, ignition and valve timing drift, reducing power, raising fuel use, and risking serious engine damage. Itβs a small part that protects the whole valvetrain.
How it works
The arm pivots on a hardened bushing while a spring or hydraulic plunger pushes it against the belt via the idler. This constant force removes slack as the belt stretches with heat and age. OEM geometry keeps the belt tracking true, cutting noise and wear.
What if it fails
Expect cold-start squeal, belt flutter, misfires, unstable idle, and metal dust near the cover. The belt can jump teeth, causing loss of power or no-start. On interference engines, severe slip can bend valves and damage pistonsβcostly, avoidable failure.
Tech notes
- Replace with belt, idlers, and tensioner together.
- Torque pivot/lock bolts to spec; align marks.
- Rotate engine by hand two turns and recheck tension.
- Keep oil/coolant off the belt and arm.
