Power Steering Reservoir Oil Filter
This small filter sits inside the power steering fluid reservoir and keeps the hydraulic circuit clean. It is needed because the steering pump and control valve work with very tight clearances. Even tiny rubber dust from hoses or metal wear particles can scratch parts, reduce pressure, and make steering feel heavy.
How It Works
As fluid returns to the reservoir, it passes through the filter media. The filter traps dirt and sludge while letting clean fluid flow back to the pump. This helps maintain stable pressure, smoother steering assist, and quieter pump operation. A healthy filter also supports longer life for seals, rack, and pump.
What Happens If Itβs Clogged or Broken β οΈ
If the filter is blocked, the pump can starve, causing whining noise, foamy fluid, slow steering response, and overheating. If it tears, debris circulates and accelerates pump and rack wear, leading to leaks and costly repairs. Replace it when fluid is dirty, steering feels inconsistent, or during reservoir service.
Workshop Tip β
Use the correct steering fluid, keep the reservoir clean, and bleed air after service to prevent pump noise and cavitation.
