Steering Gear Screw Shaft Oil Seal ?️
This precision oil seal sits in the steering gear housing and seals around the screw/shaft area. Its main job is simple: keep steering fluid/grease inside the gearbox and keep dust and water out. A healthy seal protects the internal gear teeth and bearings, so the steering stays smooth and accurate.
Why this seal is needed ✅
Steering gears work under constant load and heat. Over time, the shaft moves and micro-vibrations can harden or cut the sealing lip. Replacing the seal restores proper sealing and prevents gradual loss of lubrication that can silently damage expensive steering components.
How it works ⚙️
The flexible sealing lip rides on the rotating/oscillating shaft surface, while the outer case locks tightly into the steering gear bore. This creates a barrier that holds pressure and lubrication, even during tight turns and rough-road shocks.
If the seal is broken ?
You may notice leaks around the steering box, oily buildup, low fluid level, heavier steering, whining noises, or uneven steering feel. Ignoring it can lead to internal wear, play in the steering, and eventual gearbox failure.
