Steering Gear Screw Shaft Oil Seal ?️
This oil seal is a small but critical barrier inside the steering gearbox. Its job is to keep gearbox oil where it belongs while the screw shaft rotates and slides during steering. Clean, correct lubrication helps the gears mesh smoothly, reduces heat, and protects the steering feel you expect on every turn.
Why this seal is needed ✅
The steering box operates under load and pressure. The seal prevents oil leaks at the shaft exit point, stopping dirt and water from entering the gearbox. A healthy seal keeps internal parts coated with oil, extending the life of the worm/screw and bearings.
How it works ⚙️
A flexible sealing lip rides tightly on the shaft surface. As the shaft moves, the lip maintains contact, while the outer shell sits firmly in the housing. This dual fit keeps fluid in and contamination out during daily driving and full-lock steering.
If the seal is damaged ?
You may notice oil seepage, drops under the vehicle, or a wet steering box. Low oil leads to heavy steering, whining noises, faster gear wear, and possible steering backlash. Ignoring a leak can end with expensive gearbox repairs.
