Upper Radiator Coolant Hose

This upper coolant hose is a key link between the engine cooling passages and the radiator. It is needed to carry hot coolant from the engine to the radiator so heat can be released and the engine stays in a safe temperature range. Without a healthy hose, even a strong radiator and fan can’t protect the motor.

How it works

When the thermostat opens, coolant flows through this hose under pressure. The reinforced rubber handles heat, vibration, and constant expansion/contraction. Tight hose clamps seal both ends, preventing air entry and coolant loss.

Signs it’s failing

  • Soft, swollen, or oil-soaked rubber
  • Cracks near the ends or along bends
  • Coolant smell, crusty residue, or wetness around joints

If it breaks

A split hose can dump coolant fast, causing overheating, warped cylinder head, blown gasket, or complete engine seizure. Driving “just a little more” after a leak often turns a cheap repair into a major rebuild.
