Engine Coolant Thermostat (Temperature Control Valve) ?️
This thermostat is a key cooling-system valve that keeps your engine at the correct working temperature. It is needed to help the engine warm up quickly after start, then hold a stable temperature in traffic, on highways, and under load.
How it works ?
Inside the housing is a wax capsule that reacts to heat. When coolant is cold, the valve stays closed, forcing coolant to circulate in a small loop for faster warm-up. As temperature rises, the wax expands and opens the valve, letting coolant flow through the radiator to remove heat. This balance supports fuel economy, heater performance, and emissions control.
What happens if it fails ⚠️
If stuck closed, the engine can overheat fast, risking head gasket damage and warped components. If stuck open, the engine may run too cool, causing weak cabin heat, higher fuel use, rough running, and check-engine lights due to incorrect temperature readings. Leaks or a weak spring can also cause temperature swings and poor cooling efficiency.
