Driver Safety Air Cushion Module for Mercedes
This steering wheel air cushion module is a key part of the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) ?. It is needed to protect the driver during a frontal impact by reducing head and chest injuries. On many Mercedes vans, it works together with crash sensors, the SRS control unit, and the seat belt pretensioners.
How It Works
When the vehicle detects a strong deceleration, the SRS control unit sends a signal to the inflator. The igniter starts a fast gas reaction, filling the cushion in milliseconds. The bag then vents through calibrated ports, slowing the driver smoothly instead of causing a hard hit.
Why Replacement Matters
If this unit is deployed, damaged, water-affected, or has wiring/connector faults, the SRS warning light may stay on β οΈ. In a crash, the airbag may not deploy, may deploy late, or could trigger fault codes that disable the full safety system. A broken module can also cause intermittent horn/steering controls issues if related connections are disturbed.
