Cooling System Pressure Cap for Mercedes π§
This small cap is a big deal in the cooling circuit. It seals the expansion tank/radiator neck and keeps the system at the correct pressure, so coolant can absorb heat without boiling too early. On modern Mercedes engines, stable pressure means stable temperature, cleaner combustion, and longer life for hoses, water pump, and thermostat.
How it works βοΈ
Inside the cap are spring-loaded valves. The pressure valve holds coolant under a set pressure to raise the boiling point. When pressure gets too high, it releases safely into the overflow path. A second vacuum valve lets coolant return when the engine cools down, preventing hose collapse and air pockets.
Why you need a healthy cap β
A correct seal stops coolant loss, keeps the heater working properly, and helps prevent overheating in traffic or hot weather.
If the cap is faulty π¨
You may see coolant smell, wet stains around the tank neck, temperature spikes, weak cabin heat, bubbling in the reservoir, or repeated low-coolant warnings. Continued driving can lead to overheating, warped components, and head gasket damage.
