A/C Refrigerant Expansion Valve βοΈ
This air conditioning valve is a key metering part in the HVAC system. It is needed to control how much refrigerant enters the evaporator, so the cabin cools fast and stays stable in hot weather. When this valve works correctly, your A/C delivers cold air without icing, noise, or pressure spikes.
How it works
The valve creates a pressure drop and precisely meters liquid refrigerant into the evaporator. By reacting to temperature/pressure changes, it helps the refrigerant boil at the right rate, absorbing heat from cabin air. This keeps low-side pressure in range and prevents liquid flood-back to the compressor.
What happens if it fails
- Weak or warm A/C, slow cool-down οΈ
- Evaporator freezing, airflow drops, then cooling cuts out
- High/low pressure readings out of spec, compressor strain β οΈ
- Unstable vent temperature and possible refrigerant noise
Driving with a faulty valve can lead to poor comfort and, in severe cases, compressor damage due to wrong refrigerant flow.
