A/C Evaporator Temperature Sensor (Thermistor Assembly) ❄️
This small sensor is a key safety and comfort part inside the HVAC box. It is needed to measure the evaporator core temperature so the A/C system can cool strongly without letting the evaporator freeze up. When the cabin gets humid, this control keeps airflow stable and helps prevent weak cooling and bad smells caused by ice melting on the fins.
How it works ⚙️
The unit is a thermistor: its electrical resistance changes with temperature. The HVAC controller reads that signal and adjusts the compressor command and blower strategy to hold the evaporator at the right point. When the core approaches freezing, the system reduces compressor load; when it warms up, cooling resumes smoothly.
If it fails
A faulty sensor can send wrong readings, leading to evaporator icing (then sudden loss of airflow), warm or inconsistent A/C, frequent compressor cycling, or warning codes. In severe cases, the compressor may run inefficiently, raising fuel use and stressing A/C components.
