Steering Wheel Spiral Cable / Clock Spring (Airbag & Controls Contact)
? This part is required to keep an electrical connection between the steering wheel and the vehicle wiring while you turn left and right. Modern Hyundai/KIA steering wheels carry airbag signals plus horn and button commands, so a stable rotating connection is critical for safety and comfort.
How it works
Inside the housing, a flat ribbon cable is wound like a spiral. As the steering wheel rotates, the ribbon winds and unwinds smoothly, maintaining contact without twisting or breaking wires. This allows the driver airbag circuit, horn, and steering wheel switch signals to pass through at any steering angle.
Why you should not ignore faults
When the spiral cable is damaged, mis-centered, or worn, you may get an SRS/Airbag warning light, horn failure, steering wheel buttons not working, or intermittent electrical issues. In worse cases, the driver airbag may not deploy correctly in a crash. β οΈ A broken unit can also cause rubbing noises or a tight spot when turning the wheel.
Common symptoms
- Airbag/SRS light stays ON
- Horn stops working
- Buttons on steering wheel cut in/out
- Noise inside steering column when turning
