Outer Drive Shaft Oil Seal
This precision oil seal sits at the gearbox/differential outlet where the drive shaft (half shaft) passes through. Its job is simple but critical: keep transmission oil inside while letting the shaft spin and move with suspension travel. A healthy seal protects bearings, gears, and CV joints from oil loss and dirt entry.
Why this seal is needed β
The rotating shaft creates constant friction and pressure pulses inside the case. The sealβs flexible lip rides on the shaft surface, forming a tight barrier that holds fluid and blocks water, dust, and road grit.
How it works βοΈ
A sprung sealing lip maintains contact as the shaft turns. The metal outer shell anchors the seal in the housing, while the rubber compound resists heat and additives in the oil. Proper fit prevents seepage even under load.
What happens if itβs broken
Leaks start as wetness around the axle area, then drip onto the subframe or exhaust. Low oil level can cause whining, harsh shifting, overheating, and expensive gearbox damage. Contamination may also shorten bearing life and create vibrations.
