Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor

This sensor is a key input for the engine computer to control ignition and fuel timing. It’s needed to keep the engine starting fast, idling smooth, and pulling clean under load. Without a correct crank signal, the ECU can’t accurately β€œsee” engine speed and crank angle, so performance and reliability drop quickly.

How It Works βš™οΈ

The sensor reads a toothed wheel/reluctor on the crankshaft. As the teeth pass the sensor tip, it generates a precise signal that tells the ECU when each cylinder should fire and when to inject fuel. This real-time feedback helps stable RPM control, proper spark advance, and cleaner combustion.

When the Sensor Fails

A weak or broken sensor can cause hard starting, random stalling, misfires, loss of power, and poor fuel economy. In many cases the engine may crank but not start at all. You may also see a check engine light and erratic tachometer readings. Driving with a failing crank sensor risks sudden shutdown, especially when hot.
