Ignition Coil Assembly: The Heartbeat of Your Engine

The ignition coil assembly is a critical component for your vehicle's ignition system. It is responsible for converting the battery's low voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create a spark in the spark plugs, which ignites the fuel and air mixture in the engine's cylinders. This process is crucial for starting your engine and keeping it running smoothly.

Why is the Ignition Coil Assembly Needed

Without a functioning ignition coil, your engine simply won’t start. It acts as a transformer, taking a 12-volt current from your car battery and boosting it to 20,000 volts or more. This high voltage is necessary to ignite the fuel and air mixture in the engine's cylinders. Additionally, a well-functioning coil ensures optimal fuel combustion, which enhances fuel efficiency and reduces emissions.

How Does it Work

The ignition coil operates using the principles of electromagnetic induction. When electrical current flows through the coil's primary winding, it creates a magnetic field. Once the current is interrupted by the ignition system, the magnetic field collapses, inducing a high voltage in the secondary winding. This high voltage is then directed to the spark plug to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the engine.

What Happens if the Ignition Coil Breaks

A faulty ignition coil can result in a weak spark or no spark at all, leading to engine misfires, rough idling, loss of power, or even a complete failure to start. Moreover, driving with a bad ignition coil can cause damage to other engine components, such as the catalytic converter due to unburned fuel in the exhaust system.
