Crankshaft Oil Seal

This seal sits around the crankshaft where it exits the engine block, keeping engine oil inside while the shaft spins at high RPM πŸ”§. It’s needed to maintain correct oil pressure, protect the timing/belt area, and keep the underside of the engine clean.

How it works

The seal’s flexible lip rides on the crankshaft journal and forms a tight barrier. A spring ring helps the lip stay snug as heat expands parts. The outer shell presses into the housing to stop leaks around the seal body.

If the seal is worn or broken

You may see oil dripping near the crank pulley or transmission side, smell burning oil, or notice low oil level. Continued driving can soak belts, damage rubber mounts, contaminate clutches, and in worst cases lead to oil starvation and engine failure ⚠️.
