A/F Sensor (Wideband O2) for Toyota
This upstream mixture sensor keeps the engine at the ideal 14.7:1 air‑fuel balance. By feeding fast, precise data to the ECU, it delivers smooth power, clean emissions, and better fuel economy. It’s vital for catalytic converter protection and stable idle, especially during cold starts and climbs.
How it works
Inside is a heated zirconia pump cell with a reference chamber. The ECU drives a tiny current to hold the cell at stoichiometric conditions; that control current becomes the signal. Because it’s wideband, it reads rich and lean accurately, letting the ECU trim fuel in milliseconds for crisp throttle response.
Why you need it ⛽
Accurate feedback prevents over-fueling, misfires, and carbon build-up, keeping MPG high and emissions low. It stabilizes idle and preserves the catalyst.
When it fails ⚠️
Expect Check Engine Light, rough idle, poor MPG, sulfur smell, black smoke, hesitation, and hard starts. Common clues include slow response, heater circuit faults, or contamination. Long term, it can overheat the catalyst and foul plugs—replace promptly.
Tech tips ✅
Install on a cool exhaust, use O2-safe anti-seize, avoid silicone sealers, torque to spec, clear codes, and perform a drive cycle.
