Why this sensor is needed
This sensor is a key feedback device for the engine computer. It measures how rich or lean the exhaust gas is so the ECU can fine-tune fuel delivery. The result is smoother driving, lower fuel use, and cleaner emissions β .
How it works
Mounted in the exhaust stream, the sensor reads oxygen content and produces a fast-changing signal. The ECU uses this data to adjust injector pulse width in real time, keeping the air/fuel mixture near ideal. A built-in heater helps it reach operating temperature quickly after cold start ?.
What happens if itβs broken
When the sensor gets slow, contaminated, or fails electrically, the ECU may run in backup fueling. Expect poor MPG, rough idle, hesitation, fuel smell, higher emissions, and a check engine light. Long-term driving can overwork the catalytic converter and cause costly damage ?.
