Air–Fuel Ratio Sensor (Upstream) ⚙️
Why you need it 🔧
This wideband AFR sensor is the engine’s oxygen analyst. It feeds the ECU with precise air–fuel data so combustion stays clean, powerful, and economical. With correct feedback, you get smooth idle, crisp throttle, lower emissions, and longer catalyst life.
How it works 🧠
Inside is a pump-cell element that compares exhaust oxygen to reference air. The ECU drives a tiny current to keep the sensor at target lambda and reads that current as mixture value. A built‑in heater brings the element to operating temperature fast, giving accurate closed‑loop control even at cold start and idle.
If it fails ⚠️
Expect Check Engine light, rough idle, flat spots, higher fuel use, fuel smell, soot, and failed emissions. The ECU may run rich to protect the engine, which can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Prolonged driving with a bad sensor risks costly repairs.
Tech notes 🛠️
Install upstream before the catalyst. Do not touch the tip; keep it clean. Apply anti‑seize only to threads (if specified). Tighten to OEM spec, check for exhaust leaks, clear codes, and perform fuel trim relearn. Use a quality connector and proper heat routing. 🚗
