Airbag Impact Sensor Assembly β οΈ
This safety sensor is a key part of the SRS (airbag) system. It is needed to detect a sudden impact and help the control unit decide when to deploy the airbags. Without a healthy sensor, the system cannot βfeelβ a crash correctly, so passenger protection may be reduced.
How It Works ?
Inside the unit, a calibrated accelerometer measures rapid deceleration. The signal is sent to the airbag ECU, which compares data from other sensors and triggers deployment only when the crash threshold is met. The sensor is tuned to react fast, but also to avoid false deployment from bumps or potholes.
When Itβs Failing or Broken β
A damaged sensor can cause an SRS warning light, stored fault codes, or the airbag system to switch into a safety lock mode. In the worst case, airbags may not deploy during a real collision, or they may deploy at the wrong time. Corrosion, water entry, or impact damage after a minor accident are common causes.
