This small probe sits in the HVAC box and watches the evaporator core temperature. It talks to the A/C amplifier to keep the cabin cool, prevent icing, and protect the compressor. A healthy sensor means steady chill, quiet cycling, and longer component life.
Why You Need It
Without accurate temperature feedback, the system can’t balance cooling and airflow. The sensor helps maintain comfort, saves fuel by avoiding overrun, and stops the core from freezing during long drives or humid weather.
How It Works ⚙️
It’s a thermistor: resistance changes with temperature. The control unit reads that signal and modulates compressor clutch, fan speed, and blend doors. When the core nears freezing, it briefly cycles the compressor off, then back on when safe.
If It Fails
Common symptoms: A/C light blinking, weak or no cooling, sudden warm air, icing on vents, foggy windshield, short cycling, or the system shutting down to protect itself. Long-term, the compressor can suffer from liquid slugging.
