AC Expansion Valve β Precise Cooling Control βοΈ
Why you need it
This small metering unit is the heart of your vanβs air conditioning. It feeds the right amount of refrigerant into the evaporator so cabin air cools fast, stays stable in traffic, and keeps fuel use and compressor load in check. If your AC blows warm at idle, cools only while driving, or cycles too often, the valve is likely the culprit.
How it works
Liquid refrigerant from the condenser enters the valve and passes through a calibrated orifice controlled by a thermal sensing element and spring. The valve drops pressure to create a cold, low-pressure mist that absorbs heat in the evaporator. It constantly balances inlet pressure and outlet temperature to prevent icing and maintain steady vent temps.
What happens if it fails β οΈ
Stuck closed: weak or no cooling, high high-side pressure, compressor strain. Stuck open: frosty pipes, evaporator icing, fluctuating temps, possible liquid slugging that can damage the compressor. A partially clogged valve causes hissing, slow pull-down, and uneven cooling across vents.
Tech notes οΈ
Replace O-rings, torque lines evenly, evacuate the system, and recharge by weight. Always check the receiver/drier and cabin filter to protect the new valve.
