    A/C expansion valve — stable cold air, long compressor life ❄️

    From a century of wrench time, I can tell you this small metering valve is the heart of Toyota air conditioning. It’s needed to keep cabin temperature steady, protect the compressor, and deliver fast cool-down on hot days. By precisely feeding refrigerant into the evaporator, it prevents both flooding and starving, keeping efficiency high and vent temps low.

    How it works 🌡️

    A thermostatic element senses evaporator outlet temperature/pressure and moves a needle against a calibrated spring. The valve opens or closes to maintain correct superheat, matching refrigerant flow to heat load. A fine screen helps catch debris, while a corrosion-resistant body handles R134a or R1234yf pressures without drift.

    What happens if it’s broken ⚠️

    Stuck closed: weak cooling, frosty inlet, low suction, compressor runs hot. Stuck open: icing, gurgling, high fuel use, and risk of liquid slugging the compressor. Contamination can cause hunting—rapid cycling, uneven vent temps, and hissing at idle.

    Install tips 🔧

    Replace O-rings, evacuate, and recharge to spec. After a compressor or drier failure, flush and fit a new receiver/drier to protect the new valve.
