Rear A/C Evaporator Assembly for Cool Cabin Comfort ❄️
This unit is the core of the rear HVAC in long-body vans. It changes high-pressure liquid refrigerant into cold vapor and feeds chilled air to the back rows. If you carry people or heat‑sensitive cargo, this part keeps the rear cabin cool, stable, and quiet.
Why you need it
Front vents alone cannot cool the third and fourth rows. A dedicated rear evaporator gives fast pull‑down in hot weather, reduces blower strain, improves defogging, and keeps passengers comfortable on long trips.
How it works
Refrigerant passes through the expansion valve into the fin‑and‑tube core. The rear blower moves cabin air across the fins, heat is absorbed, and the refrigerant leaves as low‑pressure gas for the compressor. The housing guides condensate to a drain tube to prevent damp carpets. A thermistor helps avoid icing.
What happens if it’s broken
Signs include warm rear air, weak airflow, chemical smell, oily traces at joints, or water on the floor. Running it like this can overwork the compressor, cause icing, grow mildew, raise fuel use, and corrode fittings.
Tech notes & service tips
- Replace O‑rings, TXV, and drier when the system is opened; evacuate to 500 microns.
- Do not flush the TXV or compressor; flush lines and condenser only if contaminated.
- Clear the drain tube and clean the case to prevent odor and corrosion.
