How it works 🔧
When the A/C is switched on, the coil energizes and creates a magnetic field that pulls the drive plate against the pulley face. Friction locks them together, spinning the compressor. When power is cut, spring tension releases the plate, the pulley freewheels, and the compressor stops. Proper air gap and a smooth pulley bearing are key.
If it’s broken ⚠️
Symptoms include no cold air, clicking without engagement, belt squeal, burnt smell, metal dust, blown fuses, or a seized pulley. Continued driving can damage the belt, overload the compressor, and contaminate the system.
