Corner Clearance Sensor (Bumper Proximity Sensor)
This corner clearance sensor is a key helper for safe, stress-free parking in tight city spaces. Mounted in the bumper corner, it “watches” the blind edge of the vehicle where mirrors can’t fully help. When you approach a wall, curb, pole, or another car, it detects the distance and sends a signal to the parking assist system, which then warns the driver with beeps and/or display guidance ??.
Why this sensor is needed
The bumper corners are the first places to get scuffed. This sensor reduces low-speed contact by measuring nearby obstacles early, especially during angled parking or turning into narrow lanes.
How it works
It uses ultrasonic pulse technology: the sensor emits sound waves, then measures the return time of the echo. The control unit converts that timing into distance and adjusts warning intensity as you get closer.
What happens if it’s broken
A faulty sensor may cause constant beeping, no warning at all, random “ghost” detections, or a parking assist warning light. In real life, that can mean higher risk of bumper damage, cracked paint, and expensive parking mishaps ⚠️.
Common failure causes
- Impact to the bumper corner
- Water ingress/corrosion in the connector
- Heavy paint buildup after body repair
- Wiring damage from minor collisions
