Ignition & Starter Key Switch Assembly β‘
This electrical switch assembly is the command point between your key and the vehicleβs starting/ignition circuits. You need it to reliably power up the dash, authorize engine start, and feed voltage to the starter control line. When you turn the key, internal copper contacts rotate and bridge specific terminals (ACC/ON/START), sending clean signals to the ECU, ignition system, and starter relay.
How it works
Inside, spring-loaded contacts and a return mechanism handle the momentary START position, then snap back to ON after cranking. This prevents starter overrun and keeps accessories and ignition powered correctly.
Signs of failure & what happens if itβs broken
- No crank or intermittent starting
- Key turns but dash lights flicker or go dead
- Starter stays engaged or wonβt engage
- Random accessory power loss while driving
If worn or burnt, resistance rises, causing heat, voltage drop, and unreliable startingβsometimes leaving you stranded without warning.
